MetLife Stadium is hosting eight FIFA World Cup matches this summer — the most of any venue in the entire tournament — including the Final on July 19. Brazil, France, England, Germany, Morocco, Norway, Senegal, Ecuador, and Panama are all coming to East Rutherford, New Jersey. For Long Island groups, the world’s biggest sporting event is less than an hour away on a normal day.
But there is a catch that is going to surprise a lot of people: there is no general parking at MetLife for any World Cup match. Not for one game. Not for any of the eight.
No Parking Changes Everything About How You Plan This Trip
For all eight matches, MetLife’s massive parking lots — the same ones that handle tens of thousands of vehicles on NFL game days — will be closed to general traffic. The only parking option available to the public is a limited number of premium spots at the nearby American Dream mall, priced at $225 per vehicle, and only accessible to fans who hold a FIFA match ticket. For the Final on July 19, those spots are already sold out.
NJ Transit is building a new bus terminal at the stadium and planning bus service every 30 seconds on match days, with special trains running through Secaucus Junction. But for Long Island residents, getting to Secaucus Junction is its own journey — LIRR to Penn Station, then a transfer to NJ Transit, then the Meadowlands Rail Line to the stadium. For one person traveling solo, that is manageable. For a group of 20, 30, or 50 people, coordinating three separate transit systems on a match day, timed around connections, is a logistical challenge that can overshadow the event itself.
